The Best Carpet Cleaner
Updated November 12th, 2025
So far, we've tested 16 different carpet cleaners. Our latest rankings are below.
Budget Carpet Cleaners
Models in this category are inexpensive but have certain limitations – they usually have a very narrow cleaning path and don’t let you connect a hose for spot cleaning.
Bissel TurboClean
The Bissell TurboClean has really high tested suction at the nozzle and performed very well in our upright stain test. It’s also easy to clean, light and easy to handle. It’s currently the best budget priced carpet cleaner we tested.
Hoover PowerDash Pet
The Hoover PowerDash Pet is much more difficult to clean and maintain itself than the TurboClean. It also doesn’t clean along edges nearly as well as the TurboClean. Otherwise, it performed very similarly to the TurboClean in our tests. It’s currently the second-best budget priced carpet cleaner we tested.
Midrange Carpet Cleaners
Models in this category strike a balance between price and performance.
Hoover PowerScrub
The Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe has well above average tested suction at the nozzle. It cleans up most stains at only an average speed, but it doesn’t spread stains nearly as much as most competitors as it cleans. It also leaves carpet drier after cleaning, and it has a much larger area of coverage before you need refill or empty its water tanks than similarly priced competitors. This is by far the best midrange carpet cleaner we’ve tested.
Bissell TurboClean XL
The Bissell TurboClean Pet XL cleans stains faster than the Powerscrub but uses much more water to do so. For this reason, it leaves carpet much wetter after cleaning, and you have to refill and empty its water tanks far more frequently. It’s still the best alternative to the Powerscrub on the market though, according to our testing.
Premium Carpet Cleaners
Models in this category provide the best performance but are much more expensive, heavier and larger in size than midrange options.
Bissel Big Green Machine
The Bissell Big Green Machine has the highest measured suction at the nozzle of any carpet cleaner we tested. It cleans most stains much quicker than cheaper alternatives, and it was the only carpet cleaner we tested that was able to completely clean up the tomato sauce stain in our upright stain test. The Big Green Machine also left carpet the driest after cleaning of any carpet cleaner we tested and it has a much larger area of coverage before you need to refill or empty its water tanks than most competitors as well. It's hands down the best premium carpet cleaner we tested.
Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3
The Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3 cleaned some stains even faster than the Big Green Machine in our upright stain test, but it could never completely clean up the tomato sauce stain. It also leaves carpet wetter after cleaning and it’s generally more difficult to use and maintain.
Analysis
An examination of our testing procedures and test results.
Suction
We measured suction at three different locations
- Base
- Hose
- Nozzle
Measuring suction at the base required removing the cleaner’s dirty water tank. Behind the tank there’s a port that’s very close to the cleaner’s vacuum motor.
To measure suction at the hose we placed the vacuum gauge over the end of the hose where you would normally attach a spot cleaning tool.
To measure suction at the nozzle we made a wood box. There’s a hole on top of the box and a hole on the side. The cleaner is pushed over the hole on the top of the box. A manometer is connected to the hole on the side of the box to measure suction.
The first test gives us a good idea of base suction near the vacuum motor, the second test gives us a good idea of practical suction for spot cleaning, and the last test gives us the best indication of practical suction applied to the carpet when cleaning in upright mode.
Here are our test results:
| Base | Hose | Nozzle | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bissell TurboClean | 58 | NA | 2.40 |
| Bissell TurboClean Pet XL | 58 | 53 | 1.24 |
| Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution | 62 | 62 | 0.73 |
| Bissell Revolution HydroSteam | 56 | 62 | 0.39 |
| Bissell Big Green Machine | 74 | 66 | 3.72 |
| Hoover PowerDash Pet | 58 | NA | 2.28 |
| Hoover PowerDash Pet+ | 58 | NA | 1.93 |
| Hoover Power Scrub Deluxe | 72 | 58 | 2.27 |
| Hoover Powerscrub XL Pet | 80 | 58 | 1.88 |
| Hoover SmartWash | 90 | 83 | 1.99 |
| Kenmore RevitaLite | 70 | 72 | 0.86 |
| Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3 | 97 | 100 | 0.65 |
| Shark CarpetXpert EX151 | 80 | 74 | 3.35 |
| Shark CarpetXpert EX201 | 76 | 72 | 3.48 |
| Shark CarpetXpert EX301 | 97 | 90 | 2.29 |
| Tineco Carpet ONE | NA | 73 | 0.78 |
Note: base and hose suction are given in terms on inches of water lift. Nozzle suction is given in terms of kPa.
As you can see, there’s quite a bit of variance in all three tests.
You can also see that the best performers in the base suction and hose suction tests are not necessarily the best performers in the nozzle test.
Upright Stain Test
Next, we tested how well each carpet cleaner could clean up especially tough stains.
In our upright stain test we laid down seven different stains in two different rows.
In the top row we put
- Tomato sauce
- Peanut butter
- Chocolate ice cream
In the bottom row we put
- Grape juice
- Caramel syrup
- Chocolate syrup
- Coyote urine (predator urine is easy to source for testing)
We laid down exactly the same quantity over exactly the same area for each test.
We used exactly the same soap and water mix in each cleaner for each test.
And we pushed and pulled each cleaner at exactly the same speed for each test.
Results for our upright stain tests are below:
| Tom. Sauce | PB | Ice Cream | Juice | Car. Syrup | Choc. Syrup | Urine | Total | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bissell Big Green Machine | 7 | 5 | 5 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 1 | 30 |
| Hoover PowerDash Pet* | 11 | 5 | 5 | 2 | 4 | 5 | 2 | 34 |
| Bissell Revolution HydroSteam | 11 | 7 | 5 | 2 | 3 | 5 | 2 | 35 |
| Bissell TurboClean | 11 | 5 | 7 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 1 | 36 |
| Bissell TurboClean Pet XL | 11 | 5 | 7 | 2 | 5 | 8 | 2 | 40 |
| Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3 | 11 | 5 | 8 | 2 | 6 | 7 | 2 | 40 |
| Kenmore RevitaLite* | 11 | 6 | 10 | 2 | 4 | 7 | 2 | 42 |
| Shark CarpetXpert EX301 | 12 | 12 | 7 | 3 | 4 | 6 | 1 | 45 |
| Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution | 11 | 11 | 7 | 2 | 5 | 8 | 2 | 46 |
| Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe | 12 | 7 | 9 | 2 | 6 | 8 | 2 | 46 |
| Shark CarpetXpert EX151 | 12 | 13 | 7 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 2 | 49 |
| Shark CarpetXpert EX201 | 12 | 12 | 7 | 3 | 5 | 8 | 2 | 49 |
| Hoover PowerDash Pet+* | 12 | 11 | 10 | 3 | 6 | 9 | 2 | 53 |
| Hoover SmartWash | 11 | 10 | 10 | 2 | 6 | 12 | 2 | 53 |
| Tineco Carpet ONE | 12 | 12 | 11 | 4 | 8 | 12 | 3 | 62 |
| Hoover PowerScrub XL Pet | 14 | 10 | 13 | 4 | 8 | 12 | 2 | 63 |
| Average | 11.3 | 8.5 | 8.0 | 2.6 | 5.2 | 7.8 | 1.9 | 45.2 |
Again, there’s quite a bit of variance in results for this test.
Note that the number in each row and column represents the number of back and forth passes it took to clean each stain with each model tested. For example, it took seven back and forth passes to clean the peanut butter stain with the Bissell Hydrosteam. The lower the number, the better because the lower the number, the less passes it took to clean each stain.
Numbers greater than 10 represent stains that were not completely cleaned after 10 passes (we ended the test after 10 passes). The higher the number, the darker the stain that was left behind. For example, the PowerDash Pet scored an “11” for the tomato sauce stain because it left behind a relatively light stain. The PowerDash Pet+ scored a “12” because it left behind a slightly darker stain.
The best performers in our upright stain test have the lowest total scores. The best performer overall was the Bissell Big Green Machine, with a total score of 30. The worst performer was the Hoover PowerScrub XL Pet with a score of 63.
*These models were only scored through the center of their cleaning paths. All other models were scored throughout their whole cleaning path (including edges).
Moisture extraction
After our upright stain test we measured the moisture level of the strip of carpet that was cleaned.
Moisture test results are posted below:
| After 10x Passes (%) | After +3x Passes (%) | |
|---|---|---|
| Bissell Big Green Machine | 24 | 23 |

| Kenmore RevitaLite | 28 | 25 |
| Bissell Revolution HydroSteam | 29 | 26 |
| AVERAGE | 26.8 | 24.5 |
Note: results in the first column are for readings taken after the initial 10 back and forth passes in our upright stain test. Results in the second column are for readings taken after three additional “dry” passes.
Dry pass explanation
During our upright stain test we hold the trigger of each carpet cleaner to dispense soap and water on the forward pass, and we release the trigger to maximize suction on the backward pull. During these three “dry” passes we don’t pull the trigger at all to see how dry the carpet cleaner can get the carpet if it doesn’t dispense any soap and water.
Area of Coverage
During our upright stain test we also measured the volume of water and soap each cleaner used per sq. ft. of coverage. We then used this data and the total measured volume of each cleaner’s clean water tank to determine its area of coverage per clean water tank.
Those results are listed below:
| Sq. Ft. Per Clean Tank | Total Clean Tank Capacity | Oz. Soap + Water Used Per Sq. Ft. | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bissell Big Green Machine | 373 | 224 | 0.6 |
| Hoover SmartWash | 360 | 144 | 0.4 |

| Hoover PowerDash Pet | 76 | 61 | 0.8 |
| Bissell TurboClean | 62 | 80 | 1.3 |
| AVERAGE | 137* | 119 | 0.8 |
Based on how quickly each model’s dirty water tank filled up during testing, we can also estimate each model’s area of coverage per dirty water tank.
| Sq. Ft. Per Dirty Tank | Dirty Water Tank Capacity | |
|---|---|---|
| Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3 | 706 | 489 |
| Bissell Big Green Machine | 390 | 224 |

| Bissell TurboClean Pet XL | 48 | 56 |
| Bissell TurboClean | 44 | 52 |
| AVERAGE | 89* | 96 |
As you can see, certain models can cover a much larger area before you need to refill and empty their tanks than others. The top performers when it comes to area of coverage are the largest cleaners we tested (with the largest water tanks) – the Bissell Big Green Machine and the Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3.
*Average not including the top three outliers
Maintenance
After washing carpet, we had to clean each model’s cleaner head (brushroll(s) + nozzle) and dirty water tank.
It was much easier to clean certain models compared to others.
Models that had
- Easily removable nozzles
- Easily removable brushrolls
- Dirty tanks that came apart easily
- Dirty tanks that didn’t have a lot of components
Were much easier to clean overall.

| Tineco Carpet ONE | yes | 8.2 | ONE - stain-remover tool (4" suction area) |
For our spot cleaning test we only laid down three stains
- Tomato sauce
- Peanut butter
- Chocolate ice cream
Again, we followed exactly the same protocols with each model we tested.
Standard protocol involves:
- Five back and forth passes spraying the stain
- Scrubbing the stain for 15 seconds
- Three back and forth passes angling to spot cleaning tool forward to maximize suction
The steps above comprise one cleaning cycle. We completed five cleaning cycles for each stain.
Results for all of the models we tested are listed below:
| Tomato Sauce | Peanut Butter | Ice Cream | Assigned Score | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shark CarpetXpert EX201 | very light | clean after 4 | v. light to clean | 10.0 |

Note how most models couldn’t completely clean most stains. Instead, we’re really ranking models here based on the lightness of stains remaining after the test.
Other Notes and Features
We also measured, weighed, and evaluated each model’s general design and build quality.
Certain models had very narrow cleaning paths. Others had much wider cleaning paths (the path over which the cleaner washes carpet).
| Path Width (in.) | |
|---|---|
| Hoover Power Scrub Deluxe | 10.5 |
| Hoover Powerscrub XL Pet | 10.5 |
| Hoover SmartWash | 10.5 |
| Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3 | 10.25 |
| Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution | 10 |
| Bissell Revolution HydroSteam | 10 |
| Shark CarpetXpert EX151 | 10 |
| Shark CarpetXpert EX201 | 10 |
| Kenmore RevitaLite | 9.75 |
| Bissell TurboClean Pet XL | 9.5 |
| Bissell Big Green Machine | 9 |
| Shark CarpetXpert EX301 | 9 |
| Tineco Carpet ONE | 9 |
| Bissell TurboClean | 7.5 |
| Hoover PowerDash Pet | 7.5 |
| Hoover PowerDash Pet+ | 7.5 |
Certain models also had special features that we take into account to compare and rank different models.
For example, the Bissell Hydrosteam uses steam in addition to soap and water to clean. This definitely impacted its performance in our testing in a positive way - the Hydrosteam performed relatively well in our upright stain test despite having very low measured suction because it uses steam to clean.
Other features really didn’t make much of a difference in our testing at all. For example, the Bissell ProHeat 2x Revolution has a CleanShot feature which is basically a sprayer on the front of the cleaner head – a sprayer that you can use to pre-spray stains before you clean it. This particular feature really didn’t make much of a difference in our testing so it really doesn’t count as a positive or a negative when we rank the ProHeat 2x Revolution against other carpet cleaners we tested.
