Stain Cleaning Tests

Passes to clean... ProHeat 2X HydroSteam Average
Tomato Sauce 11 11 11.3
Peanut Butter 11 7 8.5
Ice Cream 7 5 8.0
Grape Juice 2 2 2.6
Caramel Syrup 5 3 5.2
Choc. Syrup 8 5 7.8
Coyote Urine 2 2 1.9
Total 46 35 45.2

The table above lists the number of passes it took to clean each stain.

A score higher than 10 indicates the stain wasn’t cleaned after 10 passes (we ended the test after 10 passes). The higher the score past 10, the darker the stain that was left behind.

As you can see in the table above, both models left behind a light tomato sauce stain after 10 passes, but only the ProHeat 2x Revolution also left behind a light peanut butter stain after 10 passes. The HydroSteam completely cleaned up the peanut butter stain in only 7 passes.

The HydroSteam also outperformed the ProHeat 2x Revolution cleaning up several other stains. It was an especially impressive performer cleaning up the syrup stains. It cleaned up the caramel syrup stain in 2 fewer passes than the ProHeat and it cleaned up the chocolate syrup stain in 3 fewer passes than the ProHeat.

Winner: HydroSteam, by a large margin

Moisture level... ProHeat 2X HydroSteam Average
After 10x Passes (%) 28 29 26.8
After +3x Passes (%) 25 26 24.5

Both models left the carpet wetter than average after cleaning, though the HydroSteam left carpet even wetter than the ProHeat 2x Revolution.

Area of Coverage

ProHeat 2X HydroSteam Average
Sq. Ft. Per Clean Tank 116 105 137
Total Clean Tank Capacity (Oz.) 128 126.5 119
Soap + Water Used Per Sq. Ft. (Oz.) 1.1 1.2 0.8
Sq. Ft. Per Dirty Tank 59 79 89
Dirty Water Tank Capacity (Oz.) 54 64 96

Both models have a very similar size clean water tank, but the HydroSteam uses slightly more water to clean, so it cleans a smaller area than the ProHeat before you need to refill its clean tank with soap and water.

The HydroSteam does have a significantly larger dirty water tank and so it can clean a larger area than the ProHeat before you need to empty its dirty water tank.

Winner: Tie – the ProHeat 2x Revolution can cover a larger area per clean tank. The HydroSteam can cover a larger area per dirty water tank.

Maintenance

You can take apart the dirty water tank of both models to clean these tanks very easily.

You can also remove the nozzle of both models to clean around their brushrolls fairly easily. There are slightly more parts to clean on the HydroSteam though.

Winner: ProHeat 2x Revolution

You can connect a hose to both models to use a spot cleaning tool.

Both models performed very similarly in our spot cleaning test.

Staining left-over after spot cleaning test... ProHeat 2X HydroSteam Average

Peanut Butter very light very light very light
Ice Cream light light light

Winner: Tie

Other Notes and Features

Both models have one unique defining feature.

The HydroSteam uses steam in addition to soap and water to clean. This feature made a big difference in our testing. Recall the HydroSteam was able to perform very well in our upright stain test despite having very low measured suction. We believe it was able to do so because it uses steam in addition to soap and water to clean.

The ProHeat 2x Revolution features CleanShot. Using CleanShot you can pre-spray stains. There’s a sprayer at the front right of the cleaner that activates when you step on a button on the back of the cleaner head. This particular feature didn’t really make much of a difference in our testing though. The ProHeat cleaned the stains slightly faster when pre-spraying, but only by a pass or two. If you count pre-spraying as an additional “pass” in our test, it really didn’t clean any faster at all when pre-spraying.

Winner: HydroSteam – because it’s steam cleaning feature actually made a difference in our testing.

Verdict

Our bottom line recommendations.
