| Base | 62 | 90 | 72 |
| Hose | 62 | 83 | 71 |

Stain Cleaning Tests
| Passes to clean... | ProHeat 2X | SmartWash | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tomato Sauce | 11 | 11 | 11.3 |
| Peanut Butter | 11 | 10 | 8.5 |
| Ice Cream | 7 | 10 | 8.0 |
| Grape Juice | 2 | 2 | 2.6 |
| Caramel Syrup | 5 | 6 | 5.2 |
| Choc. Syrup | 8 | 12 | 7.8 |
| Coyote Urine | 2 | 2 | 1.9 |
| Total | 46 | 53 | 45.2 |
Despite having more measured suction, the SmartWash performed worse than the ProHeat 2x Revolution in our upright stain test.
The table above lists the number of passes it took to clean each stain.
A score higher than 10 indicates a stain wasn’t cleaned (we ended testing after 10 passes). For example, both models didn’t completely clean the tomato sauce stain. Both models left behind a very light stain which equates to a score of 11.
The ProHeat also left behind a light peanut butter stain after 10 passes. The SmartWash was able completely clean this stain in 10 passes.
Conversely, the SmartWash left behind a chocolate syrup stain after 10 passes, while the ProHeat 2x Revolution completely cleaned this stain in 8 passes.
Totaling up the number of passes it took to clean each stain and accounting for any left over stains, the total “stain score” for the ProHeat was 46 and the total score for the SmartWash was 54. The lower the score the better, and so…
Winner: ProHeat 2X Revolution
Moisture Extraction
| Moisture level... | ProHeat 2X | SmartWash | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| After 10x Passes (%) | 28 | 28 | 26.8 |
| After +3x Passes (%) | 25 | 24 | 24.5 |
After our upright stain test we measured the moisture level of the carpet that was cleaned.
The reading for both models was the same – 28%.
After three additional dry passes the reading for the SmartWash was slightly lower - 24% vs 25% for the ProHeat 2X Revolution.
Winner: SmartWash
Area of Coverage
| ProHeat 2X | SmartWash | Average | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sq. Ft. Per Clean Tank | 116 | 360 | 137 |
| Total Clean Tank Capacity (Oz.) | 128 | 144 | 119 |
| Soap + Water Used Per Sq. Ft. (Oz.) | 1.1 | 0.4 | 0.8 |
| Sq. Ft. Per Dirty Tank | 59 | 333 | 89 |
| Dirty Water Tank Capacity (Oz.) | 54 | 64 | 96 |
The SmartWash does uses significantly less water than the ProHeat 2x Revolution to clean, and so it can cover a much larger area before you need to empty or refill its water tanks.
Winner: SmartWash
Maintenance
You can easily remove the nozzle of both cleaners to access their brushrolls for cleaning (after washing carpet).
You can remove the SmartWash’s brushrolls more easily though by simply pressing down on a lever, while you have to remove the ProHeat’s brushrolls using a screwdriver.
Winner: SmartWash because its brushrolls remove more easily.
Versatility
There’s a port on the front of both cleaners to connect a hose and spot cleaning tool.
Both cleaners also come with the same length (8 ft. long) hose and similar spot cleaning tools.
The SmartWash, though, performed better in our spot cleaning test.
| Staining left-over after spot cleaning test... | ProHeat 2X | SmartWash | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tomato Sauce | light | light | light |
| Peanut Butter | very light | clean after 4 cleaning cycles | very light |
| Ice Cream | light | very light to clean | light |
| Assigned Score | 8.3 | 9.3 | NA |
Winner: SmartWash
Other Notes and Features
The SmartWash automatically dispenses soap and water when you push it forward, and automatically maximizes extraction when you pull it backward (on the ProHeat you have to manually hold and release a trigger to do this).
This functionality actually hurt its performance in our testing though. The problem is that you have to push at a minimum threshold of speed for it to properly dispense soap and water, and the standard push speed for our upright stain test is very slow, so the SmartWash would sometimes not properly dispense soap and water during testing.
The ProHeat 2x Revolution uniquely features CleanShot functionality. Using CleanShot you can pre-spray stains before you clean them regularly.
This functionality really didn’t make much of a difference in our testing though. If you count pre-spraying as an additional “pass”, the ProHeat cleaned the stains about equally fast whether we pre-sprayed them or not.
Winner: Tie – neither model’s special features improved their performance in our testing.
Verdict
Our bottom line recommendations.
The SmartWash won a lot of categories but the ProHeat 2x Revolution won the most important category – upright stain cleaning. Because it won this most important category we recommend the ProHeat 2X Revolution over the SmartWash.
